Issues of women and security discussed at the Embassy of Lithuania

Seminar “Women and Security” was held at the Embassy of Lithuania in Oslo on October 27. Dozens of participants representing Norwegian state institutions, non-governmental organizations, media and Oslo Diplomatic Corps attended the event.

The Seminar was organized in cooperation between the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Norway and the International Forum, Oslo. Speakers from Lithuania and Norway shared their experience and views on the participation of women in the field of security. The seminar was opened by Norwegian diplomat, former NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security Mari Skåre, followed by former Chief Public Prosecutor of Norway Siri Frigaard. The list of panellists included First Vice President of the Sorting Marit Nybakk, former Minister of Defence Anne-Grethe Strøm-Eriksen, former Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Gintė Bernadeta Damušis and EU Ambassador  to Norway Helen Campbell.

During the seminar, special attention was paid to the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1325, adopted 15 years ago. Norway is very active at promoting this document that deals with issues of women, peace and security and at violence against women in conflict areas. This agenda also falls in line with Lithuania’s priorities during its stint as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the years 2014-2015. Lithuania continuously raised the issues of, inter alia, the protection of women and children in armed conflict. The election of the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė to the Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders has further increased Lithuania’s possibilities to contribute to solving of the issues of women, peace and security.
