New! ART IN A GLOBAL WORLD - FRUITFUL EXCHANGE OR COMMERCIAL WATERING DOWN?

Debate on September 23, 2008 at 5.00-6.45 p.m. with:

Arunas Gelunas, vice rector of Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts

Per Nilsson, lector at Konsthögskolan Umeå University

Mikkel Bogh, head of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Visual Arts

Moderator: Tore Leifer, host on the radio program Kulturnyt on P1 and P2

Due to globalization, art is no longer bound by national restrictions. Thoughts, ideas, traditions and ways of expressions are exchanged across frontiers and continents. Along with the new information technologies have come new ways of presenting artworks to a larger and larger audience. And it has become increasingly easier to reach an audience no longer consisting only of connoisseurs. Globalization has opened the doors wide for both artists and art consumers.

But what are the benefits and the consequences for the art and the artist of the market growing to embrace the whole world? Do the national and cultural distinctions dwindle in the wake of the global exchange of art and culture? Do the increased network of artists and consumers and the new information technology contribute to a fruitful exchange of ideas? Or are we in the middle of a commercialization of the art that will reduce it to mere entertainment of a poor quality? Does globalization equal fruitful, cultural exchange or commercial watering down of the arts?
