Photo exhibition “Jewish Quarter in Vilnius” to be opened at the Embassy

On November 12 (Thursday) at 5.30 pm a photography exhibition “Jewish Quarter in Vilnius” will be opened at the Lithuanian Embassy in Oslo. The exhibition will be open to the public November 16-18, from 1 to 4 pm.

The photographs by the Lithuanian Air Force captain, topographer and amateur photographer Mečys Brazaitis (1903 – 1952) picture Vilnius in 1940, seven months after the capital was returned to Lithuania and a week before the Soviet occupation. The photographs of unique historical value portray the daily life of the Jewish quarter and its unique views of small streets and courtyards.

Mečys Brazaitis emigrated to the West in 1944, and his family retained the photo negatives. Wishing to present the author’s photographic legacy, family members forwarded the archive of photo negatives to the Association of Open Society Studies, which is based in Kaunas. Photographic images were reproduced from digital versions.

The exhibition was prepared by Kaunas Photography gallery in cooperation with the chairman of the Association of Open Society Studies, art researcher Valentinas Gylys.
